Is Paying for Traffic Worth It?

trafficIf you’re using Google Adwords as your only way to attract traffic to your website then you’re making a mistake. There are so many free ways to attract visitors that paying for traffic should really only be considered after you’ve exhausted the other methods.

I’ve been using a Google AdWords campaign to drive a small number of people to this site.  It’s mostly an experiment to get used to running campaigns and seeing all the options that Google put in there.

In reality it’s best to use a PPC (Pay Per Click) advertising campaign after you can quantify your conversion rate and the amount of value per each visitor.  That way you can be fairly certain that the marketing investment will pay off. There’s two ways to do that:

  1. put the money upfront for an advertising campaign and hope for the best.
  2. use free marketing online to drive the initial burst of traffic and quantify your conversion rate and value per page view.

It’s pretty easy to spend money on marketing.  It can quickly get out of hand. My advice is to quantify your marketing and make sure you’re getting something in return for your investment.  In business, trust the numbers.

Ironic plug, errr….comment for a site that is “owned by Cheapskate Intenet Riches”

Isn’t Cheapskate Intenet Riches’ Motto to “NEVER SPEND A SINGLE CENT UNNECESSARILY BUT MAKE ALL THE MONEY YOU CAN EVER IMAGINE ONLINE”?

I think that is what he is talking about here on this post, i.e. not spending money on any PPC (until you know your conversion rate)

HalOtis,
I like this post and totally agree with you: quantify your marketing. That is probably rule one of direct marketing (DM), but so easily forgotten.
On the other hand PPC is useful (done in the right way) and shouldn’t be neglected (the mistake I am prone to recently)

The pay as you click is te better way to advertise because you only pay for he clicks and not the exposures. However if you have a banner that display a web address people will remeber the address without clicking on the ad and will be saving you money.
