Facebook is the new Google

The internet is a continuously changing beast. I’m making a rather bold claim that Facebook is going to eclipse Google as the heart of the internet in the next few years.

I recently read an interesting article at slate.com about how 18 to 25 year olds are giving up on email in favor of using things like Twitter, SMS, IM, and Facebook to communicate to friends. History has shown that time and time again it’s the older people that are forced to keep up. If we want to be able to communicate with coming generations we’ll have to get used to these new technologies.

The viral nature of Facebook has showed no signs of slowing down. Facebook hosts the internet’s largest photo library (larger than Flickr). They have millions of dedicated people that visit the site many times per day, and many millions more that visit at least once per month.

With the opening of the platform to independent developers the doors have been opened for nearly infinite variation. This will let people share all their long tail interests. The Facebook experience will become very personal over the next few years allowing all users to express and communicate their many varied interests.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been thinking about this quite a bit.

• Facebook is so new that there is still plenty of room to dominate any particular niche.
• There are not many people out there yet that really understand how to leverage the platform so there is the potential of becoming THE Facebook guru.
• The possibilities of merging an existing product or service or business into Facebook have yet to be figured out.
• The potential of such precise demographically targeted advertising is unknown on the internet.
• Going viral is entirely possible with the interconnectedness that comes with the Facebook network.

If you’re not on Facebook, sign up. Now! If you’re on there, find some groups to join, find some interesting applications to add, create your own groups or applications, upload more photos and more videos.

Don’t be left behind in the coming revolution.

I created a Facebook account just to see what the fuss was about, I removed it about two days after joining up. I found it annoying and complete waste of time.
