Monetizing with Adsense

A long time ago I tried to make money with Google Adsense on a few of my sites and the results have never been very good.  But in the last few days I learned of a few things that I wanted to try and logged back into my adsense account for the first time in years to start posting some of my ads again.

Are there better ads providers out there?  for sure.  But Google Adsense is the one that I have a killer tip that I wanted to test out.

The biggest problem I’ve found with Advertising on the web is that it’s too far removed from the realities of selling.  Putting a bit of HTML on a page that displays advertising is like shying away from actually asking for someone to give you money.

In that way, I’ve always equated Google Adsense to a job except with more wishful thinking required.  When you’re only getting a dime per click and only 0.1% of people click on an ad it takes a long time to make a salary.  But at least you don’t have to sell anything.

It’s far better to be on the other side of the equation.  You should strive to be the person who is advertising something rather than just displaying the ads.

The economics of the person with something to sell are much more clear. With some testing you can determine your conversion rate and click costs.  With those two numbers you can determine what your profit margin needs to be to make a profit.  For example at 10 cents a click and 1% of those visitors buy you need to make $10 per sale (Lifetime value) to break even.  If you’re getting $20 per customer then effectively you have a free money machine.  For every $10 you put into Ads you get $20 back.  If you had such a machine how much money would you put into it?

So I like Adwords better than Adsense.  But it’s better to know and use both services.

Hi Matt, good points. One site I’ve found to help generate additional adsense revenue is Flixya.com. You can cross-post your blog as well as add photos and videos. It’s a great site and the people are friendly too. :)

My experience with Adsense wasn’t good enough for what I need, but when comparing with other programs like bidvertiser it stills on top. My advice is: make tests with all and take your conclusions :)

I always like to think of Adsense as sitting out on the street corner begging for change. That’s what I do for a living, I sit on the side of the web, stick my adsense out and beg for change.

Of course the people on the streets are probably making more cash than I am with Adsense
